The Southern California Medical Museum
The Southern California Medical Museum
Annual Report 2008-2009
The Historical Committee met 11 times during 2008/2009 fiscal year, and our members still give generously of their time in support of the Medical Museum. We are continuing our efforts to recruit new members to serve on the Committee. Accomplishments of the Historical Committee this past year include:
Museum Publicity
* Our museum’s website “ www.socalmedicalmuseum.org “ is very successful. Recent donations of artifacts to the museum are a result of the public discovering the Southern California Medical Museum on the internet. The website features many photos of our museum exhibits. Many links are provided to various medical museums and organizations. The website will be a continuous project as it is with most websites.
Museum Displays:
* Our docents were very busy with 23 tours since July 1, 2008. Approximately 304 adults, college students, and children enjoyed visiting the museum, seeing the many displays of medical instruments representing various specialties. Several people used the written “Docent Tour Guide” developed last year when a docent was not available.
* A new museum cabinet was built to house additional displays.
* Dr. Bert J. (Hans) Davidson created a PowerPoint presentation of the museum for large tour groups. They are able to view the museum through the presentation and ask questions. This greatly assists our docent(s) with the large groups.
Future Goals and/or Projects:
* Plant a medicinal garden outside the green door to the museum.
* Develop a professional tri-folded color brochure of the museum.
* Completion of The Colors of Medicine, a book written by Dr. Elliot Weinstein.
Donations
* Our Museum continues to truly live up to our name, the “Southern California Medical Museum”. We continue to receive donations of equipment and books from physicians and others throughout Southern California.
* An individual living in New York is considering donating her collection of infant feeders to the museum.
Medical Museum’s Annual Open House Event
*Our 12th Annual Open House event, titled “Murder at the Museum” was very successful with over 165 people in attendance. Sherlock Holmes (alias Dr. Elliot Weinstein) opened the afternoon event and introduced our guest speakers: Ricardo Tomboc, Forensic Specialist II from San Bernardino Police Department; Frank Sheridan, M.D., Chief Medical Examiner, San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department; and Sergeant Pamela Koehler, Correctional Training Officer, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Arranged by Ricardo Tomboc, students from La Puente Valley ROP Forensic Science Academy created a crime scene. Visitors to the event lined the sidewalk for the opportunity to have their picture taken in the crime scene.
* We would like to express our appreciation to the Alliance for assisting at the registration table and providing the refreshments, and to the Medical Society as a whole for all their assistance with the logistics of this year’s Open House.
In closing, I would like to recognize and thank all of our active and corresponding members for giving freely of their time and efforts for the Historical Committee. I also want to express our thanks for the tremendous help the Medical Society staff has been to our Committee and Museum.
On behalf of Historical Committee members and myself, I would like to express our appreciation to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for their continuing support of our Committee and activities, and for allowing me the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Historical Committee.
Elliot Weinstein, M.D., Chairman
